At 74, Eleanor and her husband recently hosted a modest garden party to mark their 50th anniversary. Wanting a quieter affair, she invited just 15 guests. Thinking it best for everyone, she suggested her daughter-in-law (DIL) leave her two young grandsons at home and only bring her teenage granddaughter, Lily, whom she had always shared a closer bond with.
Eleanor believed the boys, aged 10 and 12, wouldn’t enjoy the adult-focused event, while 16-year-old Lily could engage more easily with the group.
Her DIL attended the party with Lily and remained quiet throughout the evening, which Eleanor didn’t think much of at the time. However, just two days later, at three in the morning, Eleanor received a distressed phone call from her grandson.
Alarmed, she rushed to their home, only to find a heartbreaking scene: her DIL was packing up her car, visibly angry and emotional, while her son pleaded with her not to leave. All three grandchildren stood outside, crying.
