Simon says the 68-year-old retiree is “too old” to perform the song she chose.
Just because someone is older does not imply they no longer have skill. Quite the reverse. Jenny Darren demonstrated this on Britain’s Got Talent with her unusual audition. While her song selection may not have been what some were anticipating, the audience enjoyed her performance and enthusiastic demeanor.
Jenny Darren, who is sixty-eight years old, has been singing since she was twelve, giving her almost fifty years of expertise in the music profession. Her background includes performing backing vocals for AC/DC and releasing four solo albums. One of the albums even had drummer Nicko McBrian, who eventually joined Iron Maiden.
Jenny wanted to resume her musical career after retirement. Jenny, who loves rock and roll, had taken a vacation from it and started listening to classical and jazz music instead. Jenny thought it was time to return to her origins.
Jenny appeared on Britain’s Got Talent wearing a bun, a long dress, and a button-up cardigan, like the usual retired grandma. The judges greeted her and instructed her to begin her audition. Jenny requests a little pause before starting. She starts unbuttoning her cardigan. The crowd begins to cheer, not knowing what to anticipate, and the judges appear concerned about what the grandma may have in mind.
To everyone’s surprise, Jenny threw her cardigan and large apparel off stage. Fortunately, she was wearing another clothing beneath. She now stepped in front of the audience wearing a black leather skirt, boots, and a black t-shirt. When AC/DC’s iconic song “Highway to Hell” began playing, the audience erupted in shouts as she boldly sauntered back to center stage.
The performance earned Jenny a standing ovation from both the audience and all four judges. She nailed this song! You’ve got to watch her performance.
