Grandma’s Secret to 60 Years of Marriage
A local newspaper reporter was interviewing an elderly couple who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. The husband was sitting in the living room, looking happy and content, while Grandma was in the kitchen making tea.
The reporter turned to Grandma and asked, “Ma’am, what is the secret to staying happily married to the same man for 60 years without a single major argument?”
Grandma smiled and walked out with the tea tray. “Well,” she said, “it all started on our honeymoon. We went to the Grand Canyon and decided to go down into the canyon on two mules.”
The reporter nodded, listening intently.
Grandma continued, “We hadn’t gone very far when my husband’s mule stumbled. My husband looked at the mule and said very quietly, ‘That’s once.’ Then we kept riding. A mile later, the mule stumbled again. My husband looked at it and said, ‘That’s twice.’ We kept going, and a few minutes later, the mule stumbled a third time. Without saying another word, my husband hopped off, helped me down, and sent the mule wandering off into the desert, leaving us to walk the rest of the way.”
The reporter gasped, “Oh my goodness! You had to walk all that way? What did you do?”
Grandma shrugged, “Well, I lost my temper. I started screaming at him, telling him he was stubborn, crazy, and a fool for making us walk in the heat just because of a clumsy animal.”
“And what did he do?” the reporter asked, leaning in.
Grandma smiled sweetly, “He just looked at me very quietly and said, ‘That’s once.’ …And we’ve lived happily ever after since that day.”
