A bride-to-be who canceled her big day after she had discovered that her fiancé was cheating on her used her wedding photographer to capture the moment she wrecked her dress.
A 27-year-old woman named Meredith Mata in Washington, broke up with her boyfriend of four years in June 2020 after she suspected that he was unfaithful turned out to be true.
After calling off the wedding, Meredith made a decision that instead of losing her deposit, she would arrange a glamorous photo shoot at her venue, where she sprayed water guns full of paint on her dress.
The dental hygienist said the woman wanted to find “strength and beauty” in a “heartbreaking situation” and eventually befriending the woman her ex-boyfriend cheated on her with.
Meredith said “It gives women a chance to get excited and do something nice instead of sulking in misery,”
“I’d seen divorce parties and messed up the dress shoots and always thought it was really cool, but I never thought I’d be in that situation.”
All of Meredith’s loved ones supported her decision to do the unconventional photo shoot taking place in a location she had considered for her ceremony.
She said, “Everyone was really helpful and once they got the concept, they thought it was pretty cool,”
Meredith celebrated her “dissolution” by splashing paint on her wedding dress and hanging it in the trees and shooting it with a water p.i.s.t.o.l. The dress is pictured LR before it was destroyed
Meredith stopped smashing her $3,000 dress, instead the woman decided to get the dress that she originally wanted but was pressured not to buy because it was “too revealing.”
She added: “When I was choosing my dress, my ex told me not to pick something revealing. It’s a nice dress, but it wasn’t something I necessarily imagined.
“So for the shoot, I chose a beautiful dress that I would have preferred over my actual dress. It only cost $278.”
When Meredith was asked why she wanted to have photos taken in a wedding dress after the breakup, she said: “Many women dream of their wedding day, and breaking it down is really hard.
“I’ve been looking for answers for months. I try to separate myself from the life I have created with this person. Life doesn’t always go as planned.
Meredith incorporated props into her photo shoot, including a sign that read “I’ve got 99 problems, but a husband ain’t one” and a cake celebrating what would have been her wedding day
The woman posed with a cake that read ‘I’m not doing it’ with the date of what would have been her wedding day if ice cream on it
She shared: “I didn’t feel much sadness about putting on a wedding dress. I was just excited and a little nervous to do it, but I definitely felt empowered
‘After this shoot I felt really beautiful, like a badass. It was a power move. To me it says “Hey, I’m not afraid to walk this world alone. I’m not broken and you’ll regret this.”
Meredith, who celebrated her “dissolution” with friends, said it was “important for me to get my girls involved.”
After a series of stunning photos where Meredith toasts to her new ‘uninvolved’ life, this woman donned a translucent black number to paintball the dress with splatters of dark paint.
“There are many ways a dress can be thrown away. I’ve seen women muddy or go into the ocean or set it on fire.
‘This makes a shoot like this so unique because you can do so many things with it.’ ,she said.
Meredith stood outside her wedding venue, clutching a white boquet in a short black dress as her wedding lays on the floor
The woman got engaged in September 2020 and says they bought a house together before her heartbreaking discovery.
“The relationship had taken a turn and by June it was over. I had a heartbreaking feeling and found out later that he cheated on me, so I know it was for the best.”, she said.
She managed to get the deposit back from the venue and luckily not much else had been paid in full when cancelling. She still has her original dress, but will sell it in time.
Now happily single, Meredith said: ‘I’m the kind of person who faces my fears, and I allow myself to feel everything, but never let it stop me.
‘In the end, life goes on and is what you make of it. This is just another chapter in my story.’
Meredith isn’t sure if her ex or his family are aware of her unorthodox celebration as they are no longer in touch.
However, in a strange twist, Meredith now has contact with the woman with whom her ex-fiancée was cheating.
‘We talk every day. We went out and got drunk and shared stories. It’s too early to say, but I may have made a friend through this awful situation.” , she said.
Meredith wants to encourage other women who have called off marriage, have been through a breakup or are divorced to do the same.
‘To all the women out there, listen to your intuition. If something doesn’t feel right, seek the truth. Don’t be afraid to talk to each other. Men really don’t understand the power of women, especially when we work together.
Also, don’t be afraid to be alone, spend time with yourself, and really learn what you want from a partner. Love yourself first.
“Maybe one day I’ll meet my person and like I said, my wedding day would have been — maybe someday, but not today. ‘ ,she said.
