Rich Cushworth fell deeply in love with Mercy Casanalles when they met at Christ for the Nations missionary school in Dallas.
When falling pregnant with Rich’s baby, Mercy had to return home to give birth. Mercy was in Texas on a temporary visa from El Salvador. Unfortunately, Rich wasn’t permitted to be present at the birth of his child. Instead, he stayed in the U.S. and eagerly awaited his wife’s return.
However, things took a turn for the downright strange when Mercy was handed her newborn son Jacob. The birth had gone just fine … Mercy just knew that he wasn’t hers.
Mercy told: “When I got him, I said, ‘This is not my baby.”
Strange as it sounds, something inside of this mother warned that it wasn’t her child she was holding.
She said: “I asked them, ‘Why is this baby different?’”
“He has darker skin, his facial features were different, his nose, his eyebrows.”
At that time, she didn’t argue with the doctors. Instead, she took the boy home. However, her suspicions weren’t to be confirmed for another two months, when Mercy finally decided to undergo a DNA test to once and for all put her hunch to the test.
Despite having formed a strong bond with him, Mercy was so surprised at the DNA result that shows Jacob wasn’t her and Rich’s biological son.
So, where was their real son? Rich and Mercy reached out to the necessary authorities, and then baby Jacob was returned to his proper family. However, things weren’t so simple when it came to the couple’s biological son, Moses. The El Salvadorian government refused for a whole year to give him a birth certificate or passport to travel to the States.
Cushworth said: “We just want them to give us our son back,”
“It’s a horrible situation. I have a child and I don’t know where he is.”
Thankfully, Rich and Mercy finally got their rightful baby boy after a long and trying battle with the government. It seemed that nobody knew how the swap had happened.
Rich said: “[We’re] very thankful, very happy,”
Reportedly, the El Salvadorian authorities later arrested the doctor involved and launched a criminal investigation.
