Although 2 boys are 5 and 6, this 39-year-old mother still breastfeeds them. One of the reasons she gives is breastfeeding comforts them.
Sheryl Wynne, 39, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire still breastfeeds her two sons aged five and six before they go to school and won’t stop until her sons decide it’s time on their own. She insists that it is completely normal to breastfeed her school-age children because her breastfeeding has cemented a lifelong bond between them and even made them ‘closer’.
Accordingly, Sheryl Wynne nurses her children before school, in the evening, and throughout the night. This 39-year-old mom claims that ‘mommy milk’ is the ‘ultimate parenting tool’ which helps calm her sons and comforts them when they’re ill or upset. However, she admits often receiving negative comments from other family members. In fact, they question if her still breastfeeding her children is somehow connected to their behavior but the mum-of-two says ‘that’s children’.
However, these negative comments from family and friends don’t make her change her mind and she still considers breastfeeding as a way to comfort her sons and uses it to connect with them.
She said “It’s about comfort. If they’re ill, that’s where they want to be to help them calm down but we don’t live in a society that’s supportive of that after infancy which is why we don’t see it.”
“I’ve been pretty lucky in that I haven’t had negative comments from strangers but family members and people I know have asked if I think I should stop.
They question whether the way my children behave is anything to do with them being breastfed. They’re hard work, but that’s children.” – she added.
