In a heated post on social media, Donald Trump suggested that a major Hollywood figure should be deported from the United States.
His remarks came after two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro strongly criticized what he described as the increasingly aggressive direction of Trump’s administration.
During a recent appearance on The Best People with Nicolle Wallace, the 82-year-old actor urged Americans to push back against what he sees as harmful leadership, calling Trump “an idiot” and warning that the country was at risk.
“We have to get rid of him,” De Niro said. “He’s going to destroy this country. I don’t want people acting like they’re the only Americans because they wave certain flags. We’re Americans too.”
De Niro’s broader comments
De Niro also hosted a political gathering titled “State of the Swamp,” a pointed reference to the State of the Union address delivered by Trump the same day. At the event, he said he felt betrayed by the direction the country had taken and called for a return to constitutional principles and accountability.
He encouraged citizens who value the rule of law and democratic norms to stand together and demand change, saying the country must live up to the ideals that once defined it.
Trump’s response
Trump quickly responded on his platform, Truth Social, posting a lengthy and combative message.
He first criticized Democratic representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, claiming they should be “sent back” to where they came from. (Tlaib and De Niro were born in the United States; Omar moved to the U.S. as a child.)
In the same message, Trump extended similar rhetoric toward De Niro, using harsh personal insults and questioning his intelligence.
He also referenced comedian Rosie O’Donnell, with whom he has had a long-running public feud. O’Donnell previously announced she had relocated to Ireland and was pursuing citizenship through family ties.
Trump concluded his post by asserting that the United States is stronger than ever and suggesting that his critics are angered by that belief.
The exchange highlights the ongoing and highly personal nature of political discourse between Trump and prominent figures in the entertainment industry, especially as the country remains deeply divided over leadership and policy direction.
