Our in-laws become a part of the family, and we frequently want for tight, loving ties with them. Unfortunately, it isn’t always the case. In this collection, we look at some sh0cking and even odd anecdotes concerning mothers-in-law—situations so improbable that you’d believe they were staged for television. Whether you believe it or not, all of these occurrences are genuine.
Story 1:
My husband and I had been accumulating money to go on a trip. His mother was weeping about how much debt she had, so we postponed it to aid her. Days later, she presented me a large porcelain cat. I mumbled, “Must have cost a fortune.” She rubbed my back and continued, “Well, my son had confessed to me that he didn’t really want to go on that trip!”
I was speechless. Later in the night, I approached my spouse. He froze in disbelief, swearing that he was as excited about the trip as I was, and that his mother had a habit of making up stories and speaking for him.
That day, I learned to keep my distance from her, because her lies could end up destroying my relationship.
Story 2:
My mother-in-law uploaded the image we planned to use for the pregnancy announcement cards on Facebook before we had a chance to inform any close family members. After we requested her not to do it again, she revealed the baby’s gender on Facebook. © kickslacedandready | Reddit
Story 3:
My ex-MIL screamed just before my wedding began because I had forgotten the crystal cake topper she had ordered. I feel the phrase, “That spiteful girl did this ON PURPOSE to embarrass me!” rang out the loudest once others were startled into silence by her actions. Unfortunately, this is only one of many, many stories about that nasty woman. © Clydiebaby/Reddit
Story 4:
My mother-in-law began experiencing stomach aches immediately after we announced I was pregnant and has been “unable” to eat anything. Three years later, she is still suffering from stomach aches and often complains about being unable to eat.
Fortunately, we live far enough apart for this to be simply an occasional remark, but I can’t take the drama. copyright lumos_noxa/Reddit
Story 5:
My husband’s mother was promised there would be no speeches at our reception, but while I wasn’t looking, she rushed the live singer, took the podium, and delivered a five-minute weeping diatribe about “losing her son”. © RandomTyme / Reddit
Story 6:
We were traveling someplace with my in-laws maybe 10-11 years ago when my mother-in-law asked me, “Why would you get a tattoo?” It’s so unprofessional,” to which I answered, “Because I enjoy it,” trying not to be combative and simply get along. She said, “That’s not an adult answer!” What sort of ridiculous response is that?!”
I had had enough and replied, “You want an adult answer? OK, I’m an adult, and I don’t need to clear anything with anyone, even you. “Are you satisfied now?” She didn’t talk with me for a few days. © Nathanaz / Reddit
Story 7:
My mother-in-law planned a naming ceremony for my first kid with 150 guests, but neither I nor my family were invited. We live far apart, yet I could have attended in just one week. copyright AbbreviationsFun8614/Reddit
Story 8:
When my mother-in-law realized I had scheduled a vacation with my husband, she arrived at our house unexpectedly, carrying a bag behind her. “I hope you don’t mind if I join,” she said, dismissing our objections. For the next week, she dictated our agenda, insisting on every meal and activity and claimed they were all her ideas.
By the conclusion of the vacation, she had successfully sabotaged my relationship with my husband, transforming what was intended to be a romantic retreat into a chaotic war of wills. I arrived home sunburned and fatigued from the never-ending in-law turmoil.
Story 9:
When the kids were quite little, she asked my husband and children to Christmas at her boyfriend’s place and said, “I think it’s best OP doesn’t come.” My husband took the kids without me, and her boyfriend was horrified. I relocated halfway across the nation and didn’t have any relatives or friends there; she wanted me to spend the Christmas alone. © shicacadoodoo/Reddit
Story 10:
My boyfriend’s mother approached me at dinner at her house one night and handed me something. It was a pair of cotton women’ underwear (as in panties, although I despise that term!). I quickly dropped them, saying, “These aren’t mine.” They were not mine. She handed me a pair of panties in the midst of supper after finding them in her wash.
My guy lives with his parents. They turned out to be his sister’s, who had mistakenly left them when she came to visit. Even if they were mine, why would I leave them laying around? And why would she give them to me in the midst of dinner? copyright almanzo/Reddit
Story 11:
My mother-in-law bought the world’s ugliest glass set as an engagement gift (spoiler: it matches hers) and promised to make Italian cookies for our wedding favors. Our destination wedding was three hours’ flight away. She cooked and mailed the cookies many weeks before the wedding, but they were rotten on the big day. copyright cranky_mcswede/Reddit
